FOREST HILLS, GLENVIEW, & MARTIN LUTHER KING JR PARKS
CLEVELAND, OHIO
As a part of a public improvement initiative, the City of Cleveland made significant upgrades to several out-dated city parks, including Forest Hills Park, Glenview Park, and Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Behnke Landscape Architecture coordinated with representatives from the City of Cleveland’s Architecture & Site Development department and with various subconsultants from the schematic design phase through construction document preparation for each of these parks. Behnke was responsible for site demolition, site layout, site grading, and site planting.
Prior to construction, the 10 acre Glenview Park was underutilized and contained approximately 2 acres of impervious asphalt courts. Seeing an opportunity for green stormwater management, Behnke Landscape Architecture successfully applied for a Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District Grant in the amount of $250,000. The grant was used to remove unused impervious surfaces and repurposed the space into a naturalized area with a walking trail extending throughout the site.
Previously, Forest Hills Park lacked formal recreation infrastructure and site amenities. Phase I site improvements included a new pavilion, central plaza, splash pad, play structures and equipment, public art piece, a new accessible exercise walk, all-weather exercise equipment, and parking lot. Phase II improvements are currently under construction.
Construction Cost: $1.8 Million
