CAMPUS GATEWAYS & SPRING STREET STREETSCAPE

YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY - YOUNGSTOWN, OH

In order to redefine Youngstown State's physical image and wayfinding, Behnke collaborated with EDAW to develop a master plan for a new urban core and “main street” for the YSU campus.

Behnke implemented phase I, the redevelopment of Spring Street, which functions as the main entry way into the campus.  Streetscape enhancements included two major gateways, two minor entry treatments, new furnishings, planting, curb bump-outs, and colored crosswalks.

The gateways’ new walls and columns are constructed of Berea sandstone, which complements the site’s historic architecture. Clay brick pavers and precast concrete bands define entrance points; stone columns and entry walls create a sense of arrival.

Construction Cost:  $3 Million
